Sacred Art

In 1454 the Ventimiglia court moved from Geraci to Castelbuono bringing with them a valuable asset: the Holy Relic of the Skull of St. Anne.

This created an unbreakable bond with the people of Castelbuono who proclaimed the Holy Mother of Mary, Patroness of the town. The Sacred Art section testifies this deep devotion through the “Treasure of Saint Anne”: gold and silverware, precious stones, ex-votos, sacred vestments, and centuries-old objects of faith and devotion. Part of this valuable collection is the seventeenth- century altar frontal, embroidered with threads of gold and silver, coral, grenadine and freshwater pearls, and the reliquary bust of silver that contains the skull, placed in the chapel of Saint Anne, commissioned in 1521 by Isabella Moncada wife of Simone Ventimiglia, for the grace received following a difficult birth.
